This is an old article published last year February 2014. I thought it was interesting, we can only hope it comes to our area, NOT. I only have Internet cable with reported speeds up to 75/35 mbps U/D range in NY. Google Fibre would be 1 gbps both ways for USD $70 per month. heavy.com/tech/2014/02/when-is-google-fiber-coming-to-my-city-whens-it-going-nationwide/Just to start a convo, what are some speeds you guys have been getting in your parts? Also, most of you probably know this service for testing their speed, but imma put it here anyway for those that dont. www.speedtest.net

Here's my result: www.speedtest.net/my-result/4050146510I'm in Louisville, Kentucky. It's quite expensive at around 140 USD a month with phone included. Last I checked there are petitions for Google Fiber, you'd have to get a certain number of signatures for it to be implemented in your neighborhood, it seems like it's not even a City. I briefly checked the cost of the houses in the area Google Fiber is implemented and unfortunately it's in the high income neighborhoods. Who needs affordable high speed internet access is not the rich, but the very poor. EDIT: Correction, it looks like it's going City wide and that's great, though, if you notice on the Google Fiber webpage for Austin, link here it says this:

This was back on 12/22 when I was plugged directly to the ethernet port. Here is my result: www.speedtest.net/my-result/4003852731Currently using wireless not as good and got this result: www.speedtest.net/my-result/4050168773Currently pay $80 per month for ultra 75, no phone or cable TV, only Internet. Also, use Ooma Premium phone service at $10 per month + surcharge/fees for free unlimited calls in US, and other bundled features. If you want to save money and dont need the extra features, you can go with the free basic service, which includes free unlimited calling in US with no special features, just pay the monthly surcharge/fees, which is approximately $3.83 in my area.

My parents decided to drop everything and go with Internet only since we already had phone service through Ooma and a digital antenna for local channels. We use Viki and Hulu for movies and tv series, so it worked out for us and we saved $$$.

You know what bugs me is that my phone is through the router, that means it's digital. My problem with that is the up time of computer networks is not as good as the POTS, Public Operated Telephone System, which has an uptime of six sigma which means an uptime of: 99.99966%. It's important in emergencies, the worst thing is to have a public emergency at the same time the local telephone provider is having IT issues.
The reason that ours is so expensive though is we have high upstream. It's why I can stream sometimes.

POTS is always the best, even in power outages, with the low voltage on the line there is no need for a battery backup!
Unfortunately when our area was hit by Sandy, Verizon used a lame excuse that the underground copper was damaged by Sandy. Yea right, our phone was working fine after the flood and they just decided to shut the service off the next day forcing everyone to go with FIOS.
VZ svc was horrible, the phone sounded weird, like a tinny voice inside an empty room, and the backup battery didnt last long. You had to pay for a replacement battery, as well as paying for the electric to support the phones modem box!
It seems POTS is becoming more rare and harder to obtain in our area if at all.
