I have changed the appearance of the icon for "new" messages. It now appears as new with a red oval shaped background with "new" in white letters.
If you create a message and you want it to stand out in the list of messages, you can also tag your message and go to actions and mark it as new. This will add the new icon to the front of the message subject when viewing all messages.
